Rugby-Geschichte in Bonn
Die zarten Anfänge
1967 gründeten Diplomaten um den Briten John Gysin, die schon seit 1960 als "Bonn Casuals" Rugby spielten, die Rugby-Abteilung des Bonner SC. Kräftig wurde diese Initiative seinerzeit durch den damaligen BSC-Vorsitzenden, Otto Schumacher-Hellmold, der den Anspruch des frisch fusionierten Clubs, der Zentrale Verein der Bundeshauptstadt zu werden, mit der Hereinnahme neuer Sportarten untermauern wollte. Die Anfänge waren bescheiden, da die Rugbyabteilung zunächst aus 28 Mitgliedern, davon 21 Ausländern bestand.
Wechselvolle Jahre
Schon nach Gründung der Abteilung gelang der Aufstieg in die Oberliga Südwest. Anknüpfend an die Erfolge des Rugbysports in den 60er Jahren in Bonn gelang 1971 der Aufstieg in die Bundesliga Gruppe Süd, die höchste Klasse im deutschen Rugby. Der sportliche Werdegang des BSC war in der Folge sehr wechselhaft. Abstieg in die Oberliga 1974, Rückkehr in die Bundesliege 1976 für eine Saison, dann erneut Abstieg in die Oberliga. Nach etlichen erfolglosen Anläufen gelang 1987 endlich der Wechsel in die Erstklassigkeit, aus der sich die Bonner erst 1991 verabschieden mussten. Die Teilung der Bundesliga in eine neue eingleisige Bundesliga und einer zweigleisigen 2. Bundesliga schob den BSC für Jahre zurück in die Regionalliga. 1995 kehrte der BSC für ein Jahr in die 2. Bundes- liga zurück. In der Saison 1997/98 spielte der BSC in der Regionalliga. Der Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (RCBRS) startete in der Saison 1998/1999 in der 2. Bundesliga. Mit Beginn der Saison 2000/2001 hat der RCBRS durch grandiose Siege in der 2. Bundesliga (ungeschlagener Tabellenführer) den Sprung in die 1. Bundesliga geschafft.
Die Abteilung
Die Rugbyabteilung zählte bis zur Auflösung 135 Mitglieder. Die wirtschaftliche Stabilisierung der Abteilung- mit diesem Ziel waren der Abteilungsleiter Rene Pierry und der Kassenwart Gerd Groß 1995 angetreten - wurde erreicht, die Bilanzen des schmalen Budgets ausgeglichen. Finanzielle Schwierigkeiten des Haupt- vereins und der Verlust der Gemeinnützigkeit zwangen die Abteilung das Parkett einer langen Abteilungs- Tradition zu verlassen.
Der Club
Im Dezember 1997 wird aus der Not der Abteilung der Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg e.V. gegründet. Für 1998 wurden optimale Rahmenbedingungen für die 2. Bundesliga geschaffen. Intensivere Betreuung und bessere Materialausstattung der 1. Mannschaft waren die Basis für den erhofften sportlichen Erfolg. Die Förderung der Nachwuchsarbeit war und ist ein weiteres zentrales Anliegen des Clubs, der seine Spielerdecke fast ausschließlich aus der erfolgreichen Jugendarbeit bezieht. Die Verbreitung des Rugbysports an Schulen im Bonner Raum und im Rhein-Sieg-Kreis macht enorme Fortschritte. Im August 1998 startete der Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in seine erste Saison. Es gibt zwei Senioren-Teams, sechs Jugend-Teams und eine "Alte-Herren"-Mannschaft. Der Club hat heute wieder über 130 Mitglieder und beheimatet neben ausländischen Studenten aus Australien, Südafrika, Frankreich, Spanien, Belgien auch Diplomaten verschiedener Nationalitäten und einige Mitglieder der Britischen Rheinarmee. Die Qualität der eigenen Jugendarbeit spiegelt sich in der Berufung in die Jugend/Junioren- und U23-Nationalmannschaft zahlreicher Spieler wieder, wobei der Club die meisten Spieler in der NRW-Jugendauswahl stellt.

Gentle Beginnings
1967
Led by Briton John Gysin, a group of diplomats, who since 1960 had already been playing rugby in Bonn as the "Bonn Casuals", established a Rugby Section within Bonn's sports club "BSC". At the time, the initiative received plenty of support from the BSC Chairman of the day, Otto Schumacher-Hellmold, who wanted to strengthen the club's ambition to become the central sports club in the West German capital by integrating new sporting disciplines. These were modest beginnings for rugby, with the Rugby Section initially made up of just 28 members, with 21 of these coming from abroad.
Eventful Years
1971
Shortly after its foundation, the Rugby Section gained promotion to the Oberliga Südwest (second division). Following on to Bonn's rugby successes in the 1930s, Bonn Rugby was promoted to the Bundesliga Gruppe Süd, the top division in German Rugby in 1971.
1971-1991
After 1971, the BSC Rugbies went through a series of sporting ups and downs. In 1974, the team was relegated to the Oberliga, but returned to the Bundesliga in 1976, although only for just one year, before dropping back down to the Oberliga. Several unsuccessful attempts to regain Bundesliga status followed before the team was again promoted into the top league in 1987, where it remained until 1991.
1991-1997
The decision to divide the Bundesliga into a new single top division (Bundesliga) and two parallel second divisions (2nd Bundesliga) threw the BSC Rugbies back into the third division (Regionalliga) for a number of years. In 1995, the BSC returned to the 2nd Bundesliga for a year. But the 1997/98 season saw the BSC playing in the Regionalliga again as the club came to its end.
1997
A new club was born towards the end of 1997, known now as Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg (RCBRS). The new rugby club started the 1998/1999 season in the 2nd Bundesliga. By the beginning of the 2000/2001 season, the RCBRS had achieved its goal of promotion into the 1st Bundesliga with a series of fantastic victories, leaving the 2nd Bundesliga as unbeaten champions.
The BSC Rugby Section
Up until its dissolution, the BSC Rugby Section had counted 135 members. In 1995, René Pierry and Gerd Groß became Section Leader and Treasurer respectively with the aim of achieving economic stability. They achieved their goal with the books kept for the small budget balancing properly. However, the financial difficulties which the mother club faced and the loss of non-profit status forced the BSC Rugbies to say farewell to a long tradition as a Bonner SC section.
The RCBRS Rugby Club
Faced by this difficult situation, December 1997 saw the section left behind and a new registered association, namely Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg e.V., established. By 1998, the best possible conditions had been created for a team playing 2nd Bundesliga rugby. Better training, better management and better material and equipment created the foundation which helped the 1st team reach the desired sporting success. Youth work always was and continues to be one of the central policies of the club which draws its players almost exclusively from its successful youth work. As a result, rugby has made enormous progress as a sporting discipline in schools in and around Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district. August 1998 saw the Rugby Club Bonn-Rhein-Sieg start its first season. The club runs two senior teams, six youth teams and an "Old Boys'" team. The club again counts more than 130 members, including foreign students from Australia, South Africa, France, Spain, Belgium as well as diplomats of various nationalities and a number of members of the British Rhine Army. The quality of the club's youth work is reflected in numerous players being called up for the Youth/Junior and U23 National Teams. In fact, the club provides the largest contingent of players for the NRW Youth Team.
